reflection:

The introduction of case analysis and rhetorical appeals changed the way I read “Waking Up and Taking Charge.” This changed my thoughts and how I read the essay by teaching how to know what is in the essay. you could find the rhetorical appeals in the essay we read and it helped us analysis the essay.

CL 4/14

  1. the reason my claim is true is because a lot of kids and teenagers deal with mental health issues
    1. According to Lindsay H. Dewa, “One in eight children and young people suffer from some sort of mental health condition.” “Half of mental health conditions start before age 14 yet the majority go undetected or undiagnosed.”
  2. the reason my claim is true is because social media has replace real human interaction.
    1. Based on a research essay I read  “In today’s world, many of us rely on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram to find and connect with each other. While each has its benefits, it’s important to remember that social media can never be a replacement for real-world human connection.” Laurence Robinson.
  3. the reason my claim is true is because social media can have a bad affect on people
    1. Based on a research essay I read “The results– students who spent more than 2 hours each day on social networking sites were more likely to report poor mental health, high psychological distress, suicidal thoughts, and an unmet for mental health support.” (NYTimes)
  4. the reason my claim is true is because college kids feel overwhelmed and stressed out due to social media
    1. “The American College Health Association found in 2019 that over the past year, 87% of college students felt overwhelmed by all they had to do, 66% felt overwhelming anxiety, 56% felt things were hopeless and 13% seriously considered suicide. Contributing factors include distressing and traumatic circumstances during college, such as assaults, in addition to academic performance demands.”
    2. “The college experience is not the only factor, however. Students are also coming to college with preexisting mental health challenges. For instance, over 80% of students who think about suicide during college had first thought about suicide before college.”
      1. Becker, Marty Swanbrow. “The mental health crisis on campus and how colleges can fix it.” Gale Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection, Gale, 2020. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, https://link-gale-com.proxy.libraries.uc.edu/apps/doc/IQSVTM392756890/OVIC?u=ucinc_main&sid=OVIC&xid=f43bc69c. Accessed 21 Apr. 2020. Originally published as “The mental health crisis on campus and how colleges can fix it,” The Conversation, 6 Jan. 2020.
  5. the reasons my claim is true is because it hurts more people then helps
    1. “ As the youths’ social media time increased, so did their risk, making them four times more likely than nonusers to have these problems if they spent more than six hours a day on social media.” (Washington Post)
    2. “Researchers suspect that heavy use may lead to sleep problems that can contribute to such issues, increase the risk for cyberbullying, which has been tied to symptoms of depression, and result in unrealistic comparisons of yourself and your life to those of others seen on social media.” (Washington Post)

CL 4/9

claim: A lot of people think that social media doesn’t effect people’s mental health, but it does, social media affects everyone in one way or another.

  1. the reason my claim is true is because a lot of kids and teenagers deal with mental health issues
  2. the reason my claim is true is because social media has replace real human interaction.
  3. the reason my claim is true is because social media can have a bad affect on people
  4. the reason my claim is true is because college kids feel overwhelmed and stressed out due to social media
  5. the reasons my claim is true is because it hurts more people then helps

counter argument

  • The writer named Anne K takes the position on our shared topic-issue that not everyone thinks that unhealthy mental health is related to social media. She thinks that social media helps with self esteem and developing yourself. This is my counter argument.

rebuttal

  • If I were on a debate stage and the writer Anne K said I was wrong and then explained her counter-argument to my claim, I would reply with everyone doesn’t have a perfect and healthy mental health, social media has a lot to do with unhealthy mental health as my rebuttal.

conclusion

  • Many of you are asking, ‘so what? why should I care?’. Well, here’s why this is important. If we focus on reminding people that everyone posts their best life on social media not there worst life, then it’s possible we can come up with a plan to deal with mental health and social media. This plan would involve in person interactions rather than on social media, and would be better than what is happening now, which is using social media.

Journal Two: Entry Four

  • My Neighbor Greg
    • he works as a counselor at a school. I think he would be good to interview because he knows how kids deal with mental health issues with working at a school. The information that he could provide could help provide background for my research essay
  • my dad
    • he is a health teacher at a high school. he would be good to interview because he has the education about health and how that effects mental health.
  • my friends
    • my friends would be good to interview because they all have social media and are in the age range that I am talking about in my research essay

CL 4/7

My topic includes how social media affect peoples mental health. Especially in the younger ages. This topic is important to be because I am in the age group where this is affected the most. Social media has made more of a negative impact than a positive impact. Mental health and social media should be important to everyone because it effects everyone is different ways.

The issue with in my topic would be how all the research I did basically said the same thing. Based on the research I did, it showed that everyone deals with mental health issues. This is effected because of social media. Several writers I read about, stated that Social media effects people in a bad way unless they are sharing about their business.

I want to add how people are effected in different ways. I want to add how its especially effects the younger generations.

claim: A lot of people think that mental health and social media is not related, but it is, social media affects everyone in one way or another.
